The Yorkinese is a popular member of the toy hybrid breeds and is a cross between a Yorkshire Terrier and a Pekingese. They are small, typically maturing at 6-8 pounds with the larger dogs not usually more than 10 pounds. This hybrid dog has a moderately long double coat that is not as dense as the Pekingese but not as long and flowing as the Yorkie. They come in a variety of color combinations from light fawns and browns with black markings through the very dark black and tan colorations. Some may have slight amounts of white on the face and chest.
The head is very similar to both the parent breeds with the ears turned over and hanging down to the cheek level. The eyes are dark, well set and alert and the muzzle is moderately long and tapered. Despite its small size the Yorkinese is a very active canine hybrid and loves to play well into maturity.
What You Need To Know About Owning A Yorkinese
The Yorkinese, like many of the toy dog types, can be very dominant and may attempt to control the owners rather than the other way around. Routine obedience training and socialization as well as avoiding spoiling or over-pampering these dogs is important. The Yorkinese, when well socialized, is a wonderful dog to be around. Without socialization they may become very territorial and even aggressive towards other people and animals. The Yorkinese is best suited to families with older children that are able to safely handle these small dogs without causing injury. Very young children may not be a good match with a Yorkinese.
The Yorkinese should have routine dental cleaning and care to avoid early tooth loss and decay. Despite their longer coats they only need grooming two to three times a week to keep their coat looking beautiful and free from mats or tangles.
