Dog Digestive Problems And Dog Supplements

The canine species as a whole has a generally sound digestive system when they are eating the natural foods they would find in their wild state. This would include raw meats, bones, small amounts of vegetables and fruits as well as some grasses including grains. Many of the foods that owners choose to feed their canine companion are far different than these wholesome natural foods and may include ingredients that really upset the digestive system. Even some of the more popular dog supplements that are reported to add shine to the coat or improve energy levels may cause stomach upset and problems.

Human Foods

A lot of the digestive problems that owners notice in their canine pets as well as cats and other domestic mammals are a direct result of these animals consuming human foods. Foods that we eat are loaded with:

  • Refined sugars
  • Processed flours and grains
  • Chemicals
  • Preservatives
  • Dyes
  • Artificial sweeteners
  • Toxic food items for dogs

The problem with human food for pets is not so much in a very tiny amount every now and then, but rather in the platefuls of scraps that are fed on a daily basis because people don't want the food to go to waste. Just like we enjoy foods that are "bad" for us, so do dogs. They will soulfully look at you as you are tossing that left over piece of cake in the trash, just about melting your heart with their "please, please can I have that" expression.

If you are going to feed your dog human foods, use specific types of recipes that include whole grains, no sugars or spices and no additional high fat or high carbohydrate ingredients. There are lots of recipes for healthy homemade dog foods and dog treats on the internet, plus your vet may also be able to make recommendations.

Dog Supplements For Health

A dog that is fed a balanced, healthy diet that includes either a raw foods diet or a premium quality kibble should not need dog supplements to stay healthy and have a shiny coat. If your dog has problems with hair loss, dull coat, weight loss or lack of energy or stamina, first get them checked by the vet and then consider adding dog supplements if there are no other health issues.

Dog supplements should be made from natural ingredients and should be recommended or approved by your vet. Some members of the canine species, especially the toy breeds, are known for troubles with digestive issues and providing any type of dog supplement to these breeds needs to be carefully monitored for any complications or worsening of the condition.
