General Characteristics
An active, intelligent and highly affectionate small dog, the Pomapoo or Pooranian is not a purebred but rather one of the more popular hybrid breeds. As a cross between a Toy or Miniature Poodle and a Pomeranian, they tend to favor the Pomeranian in physical appearance but the Poodle in temperament. They can be found in a variety of colors from tans and browns through to gray, black and white, merle and even solid colors. The coat can be single or double, wavy to straight and long to medium in length.
The face tends to be rather fox-like in appearance for this hybrid dog, with the triangular ears of the Pom most common. There are also Pom-A-Poos that have the longer ears of the Poodle, so owners have a choice. The tail is usually well fringed and carried high over the back or curled over the rump. The body is solid and muscular but not heavy or stocky with a mature weight of 10-15 pounds most common.
What You Need To Know About Owning A Pom-A-Poo
Pooranians are true family dogs and love to be with people they know. As companion dog types they are very attuned to their owners and are obedient, affectionate and loving dogs. The Pooranian is very adaptable and can live in small apartments or in large families with kids and other pets. They are very energetic but will also self-exercise inside if they can't have regular time in a fenced yard throughout the day. Some may be possessive and protective of their owners so early socialization and obedience training is important.
As with many of the smaller types of canine hybrids, the Pomapoo may be prone to early tooth loss if a dental hygiene routine is not put in place early in the dog's life. Feeding a good quality dry food is also important as this helps keep the teeth and gums healthy. Some Pooranians may also have a tendency to develop cataracts and early and routine eye examinations are important to treat any possible eye conditions as soon as they are diagnosed.
